What the subjunctive does and when it shows up.

The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense. It signals that the verb in the subordinate clause is colored by emotion, wish, doubt, denial, request, or unreality from the main clause.

The trigger is almost always something in the main clause + que. The WEIRDO mnemonic covers most cases.

Questions answered

Common questions.

What is the Spanish subjunctive?+

The subjunctive is a verbal mood (not a tense) used in subordinate clauses to signal wish, emotion, doubt, request, or unreality. It almost always appears after a main clause + que: quiero que vengas, dudo que llegue.

When do you use the subjunctive in Spanish?+

Use it after WEIRDO triggers in the main clause: Wish, Emotion, Impersonal expressions, Recommendation / Request, Doubt / Denial, Ojalá and certain conjunctions (para que, antes de que, cuando + future, hasta que, aunque + hypothetical).

How is the present subjunctive formed?+

Take the yo form of the present indicative, drop the -o, and add the opposite-vowel endings: -ar verbs use -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en; -er and -ir verbs use -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. So hablar → hable, comer → coma, vivir → viva.

What are the irregular present subjunctive forms?+

The six classics: ser → sea, ir → vaya, dar → dé, estar → esté, saber → sepa, haber → haya. Verbs ending in -car, -gar, -zar have spelling changes (busque, llegue, empiece). Stem-changing verbs keep their changes.

Why is creer que indicative but no creer que subjunctive?+

Affirmative belief (creer, pensar) presents something as real → indicative: creo que tiene razón. Negated belief (no creer, no pensar) introduces doubt → subjunctive: no creo que tenga razón.

Are these subjunctive exercises free?+

Yes. All 30 exercises run in your browser, work without any signup, and include a clear explanation after every answer.
