IIIHow it works

Seven rules behind the chart

  1. 1

Three groups, one pattern. Drop -ar, -er or -ir and add the ending for the person: habl-o, com-o, viv-o. The -er and -ir verbs share almost every ending; in the present they differ only in nosotros and vosotros (comemos / vivimos, coméis / vivís).

  2. 2

Future and conditional keep the infinitive. The endings go on the whole infinitive and are the same for all three groups: hablaré, comeré, viviré; hablaría, comería, viviría. A few common verbs shorten the stem first — tendr-, har-, podr-, dir-, querr-, sabr-, vendr- — but keep the regular endings.

  3. 3

Present perfect = haber + participle. he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han + a participle in -ado (-ar verbs) or -ido (-er, -ir verbs): he hablado, has comido. Common irregular participles: hecho, dicho, visto, puesto, escrito, vuelto, abierto.

  4. 4

The subjunctive starts from yo. Take the yo form of the present, drop the -o and swap the vowel: -ar verbs take -e, -er and -ir verbs take -a. hablo → hable, tengo → tenga, hago → haga. Only a handful break the rule: ser (sea), estar (esté), ir (vaya), saber (sepa), dar (dé), haber (haya).

  5. 5

Affirmative tú commands look like the present. Use the él / ella form of the present: habla, come, vive. Eight verbs have a short form instead: ten, haz, ve, pon, di, sal, sé, ven.

  6. 6

Every other command comes from the subjunctive. Negative commands and the usted, nosotros and ustedes forms are present subjunctive: no hables, hable, hablemos, hablen.

  7. 7

The imperfect is the easy one. Only three verbs are irregular in the imperfect: ser (era), ir (iba) and ver (veía).

A chart shows the forms; using them takes practice. Spanish conjugation practice mixes all the tenses, and conjugation verb by verb drills one verb in one tense at a time — with an explanation after every answer.

Questions answered

Common questions.

How many tenses are there in Spanish?+

Grammar books list fourteen: seven simple tenses and seven compound ones across the indicative and the subjunctive, plus the imperative. This chart covers the eight forms you meet most often — the present, preterite, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, present subjunctive and the commands. Together they carry the overwhelming majority of everyday Spanish.

Which Spanish tenses should I learn first?+

The present first, then the preterite and the imperfect, which you need to talk about the past. The future, the conditional and the present perfect are quick to add because they reuse forms you already know. Save the subjunctive and the commands for when the indicative feels automatic — usually around level B1.

How do I memorize irregular Spanish verbs?+

Learn them in groups that share a pattern rather than one by one: the yo-go verbs (tengo, hago, digo, vengo), the shortened future stems (tendré, haré, diré), and the stem changes (puedo, quiero). Then drill the forms in sentences — recognising a form in a table is much easier than producing it while you speak.

Can I print this conjugation chart?+

Yes. The free PDF has the regular endings and the rules on the first page and the most common irregular verbs in all eight tenses on the next two, on A4 that also prints on US Letter. You may copy it for your class.
