How regular verbs work.

Spanish verbs end in -ar, -er, or -ir. Each ending has a fixed pattern.

Once you internalize the regular endings for the present, preterite, future, and imperfect, you only need to memorize the handful of common irregulars. This page drills all four tenses across all three verb groups.

30 exercises below. Read the explanation after each answer — that's where the rule sinks in.

Questions answered

Common questions.

How do you conjugate Spanish verbs?+

Drop the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and add the endings for the desired person and tense. Regular -ar present: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. Regular -er present: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en. Regular -ir present: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en.

What are the three Spanish verb groups?+

Spanish has three verb endings: -ar (hablar, trabajar, estudiar), -er (comer, beber, leer), and -ir (vivir, escribir, recibir). Each group has its own set of endings, but -er and -ir verbs share most of them.

What's a stem-changing verb in Spanish?+

A verb whose root vowel changes in stressed syllables: e → ie (querer → quiero), o → ue (poder → puedo), e → i (pedir → pido). The change happens in all present-tense forms except nosotros and vosotros. They are sometimes called boot verbs because of the shape on a conjugation chart.

Which Spanish verbs are irregular in the future?+

About twelve common verbs have irregular future stems: tener → tendr-, venir → vendr-, poner → pondr-, salir → saldr-, hacer → har-, decir → dir-, poder → podr-, saber → sabr-, querer → querr-, haber → habr-, caber → cabr-, valer → valdr-. Endings stay the same as the regular future.

Are there any irregular imperfect verbs?+

Only three: ser → era, ir → iba, ver → veía. Every other Spanish verb follows the regular imperfect pattern: -aba endings for -ar verbs, -ía endings for -er and -ir verbs.

Are these conjugation exercises free?+

Yes. All 30 exercises run in your browser, work without any signup, and include a clear explanation after every answer.
