IWhat to watch for

Poner belongs to the group of verbs that insert a d in the future and the conditional: the stem is pondr-, not poner-. So the forms are pondría, pondrías, pondría, pondríamos, pondríais, pondrían — exactly like tener (tendría), venir (vendría) and salir (saldría).

Beyond putting things down, poner runs through dozens of expressions that are common in this tense: yo pondría la mesa junto a la ventana, no pondría la mano en el fuego por él, eso pondría un poco de color al pasillo. Learn the verb through those phrases rather than through the idea of placing objects.
