IWhat to watch for

Pon is one of the eight short irregular tú commands (pon, ten, ven, sal, haz, di, ve, sé): the bare stem with nothing after it. Pone is the present tense and can never be an order.

Everything else comes from the g of the yo form pongo: no pongas, ponga, pongamos, pongan. When a pronoun attaches, pon becomes ponlo, ponte, and ponérselo needs an accent once the word grows. Reflexively, ponerse means to put on clothes or to become — ponte el abrigo, no te pongas nervioso.
