IWhat to watch for

Poner has an irregular participle: puesto, not ponido. It sits in the same small group as hecho, dicho, visto, vuelto, abierto, escrito and muerto, and it never changes for gender or number — las notas las ha puesto el profesor, not puestas, in this construction.

The verb covers far more than placing objects: poner la lavadora, poner la mesa, poner las notas, poner pegas, poner el despertador. Almost every one of them turns up in the perfect, and the two words never separate: ya he puesto, never he ya puesto.
