The rule, in plain English.

The Spanish conditional (condicional simple) is the would tense. It attaches one set of endings directly to the whole infinitive, just like the simple future. The endings are -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían, and they are identical for -ar, -er and -ir verbs.

Every single form carries a written accent on the í. A dozen frequent verbs use an irregular stem — and it is exactly the same stem they use in the future. The conditional is used for politeness (Me gustaría), for hypotheticals paired with the imperfect subjunctive (Si tuviera dinero, viajaría), for the future-in-the-past in reported speech (Dijo que vendría), and for guessing about the past (Serían las diez).

Questions answered

Common questions.

How do you form the conditional in Spanish?+

Add one set of endings to the whole infinitive: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. This is the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs, and every form carries a written accent on the í, so hablar → hablaría, comer → comería, vivir → viviría.

Which verbs are irregular in the conditional?+

The conditional uses exactly the same irregular stems as the future. Some drop a vowel (poder → podría, saber → sabría, querer → querría, haber → habría), some insert a d (tener → tendría, poner → pondría, venir → vendría, salir → saldría), and two are short (hacer → haría, decir → diría).

What is the Spanish conditional used for?+

Mainly three things: politeness (Me gustaría, ¿Podrías…?, Querría…), hypotheticals about what would happen (Si tuviera tiempo, iría), and the future-in-the-past in reported speech (Dijo que vendría). It can also express probability about the past (Serían las diez).

How does the conditional pair with si + imperfect subjunctive?+

In a hypothetical sentence, the si half uses the imperfect subjunctive and the result clause uses the conditional: Si tuviera dinero, viajaría (If I had money, I would travel). Keep the conditional in the result clause, never in the si half.

What's the difference between the future and the conditional?+

They share the same irregular stems but take different endings. The future uses -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án and means will (hablaré = I will speak). The conditional uses -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían and means would (hablaría = I would speak).
