IWhat to watch for

The imperfect of llegar is completely regular — llegaba, llegabas, llegaba, llegábamos, llegabais, llegaban — because every ending starts with a, and the g→gu change only happens before e.

Arriving is usually a one-off event, so llegar is more often preterite. The imperfect appears for repeated arrivals (siempre llegaba tarde), for describing how things used to be (las noticias llegaban con semanas de retraso) and in llegar a fin de mes, to make ends meet.
