The rule, in plain English.

Commands (el imperativo) tell someone to do something. The tricky part is that the forms change depending on who you're talking to and whether the command is affirmative or negative.

Most command forms borrow from the present subjunctive; only the affirmative tú is built differently. Pronouns attach to the end of affirmative commands but go before negative ones.

24 exercises below. Read the explanation after each answer — that's where the rule sinks in.

Questions answered

Common questions.

How do you form commands in Spanish?+

Most command forms come from the present subjunctive: usted (hable), ustedes (hablen), negative tú (no hables) and nosotros (hablemos). The one exception is the affirmative tú, which equals the él/ella present tense: habla, come, abre.

What are the irregular tú commands?+

Eight affirmative tú commands are irregular: di (decir), haz (hacer), ve (ir), pon (poner), sal (salir), sé (ser), ten (tener) and ven (venir). Their negative forms, however, are regular subjunctives: no digas, no hagas, no vayas, and so on.

Where do pronouns go with commands?+

With affirmative commands, object and reflexive pronouns attach to the end of the verb and often need a written accent: dímelo, siéntate, levántense. With negative commands, the pronouns go before the verb: no me lo digas, no te sientes.

What's the difference between affirmative and negative tú commands?+

They look different. The affirmative tú is the present él/ella form (habla, come), while the negative tú is the subjunctive (no hables, no comas). This is the most common command mistake learners make.

How do you say 'let's...' in Spanish?+

Use the nosotros command, which is the subjunctive nosotros form: hablemos (let's talk), comamos (let's eat), vamos (let's go). For 'let's go' specifically, vamos is used affirmatively and no vayamos negatively.
