The rule, in plain English.

Spanish has two main ways to talk about the future. The simple future (futuro simple) attaches one set of endings directly to the whole infinitive and means will do.

The ir a + infinitive construction means going to do and is more common in everyday speech. A dozen frequent verbs use an irregular stem in the simple future, but they all take the same endings.

24 exercises below. Read the explanation after each answer — that's where the rule sinks in.

Questions answered

Common questions.

How do you form the simple future in Spanish?+

Add one set of endings to the whole infinitive: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án. This is the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs, so hablar → hablaré, comer → comeré, vivir → viviré.

What's the difference between the simple future and 'ir a'?+

Both talk about the future. The simple future (hablaré) means will and is common for predictions and promises. Ir a + infinitive (voy a hablar) means going to and is more frequent in everyday speech, especially for near-term plans.

Which verbs are irregular in the future?+

About twelve common verbs use an irregular stem but take the normal endings. Some drop a vowel (poder → podré, saber → sabré, querer → querré, haber → habré), some insert a d (tener → tendré, poner → pondré, venir → vendré, salir → saldré), and two are short (hacer → haré, decir → diré).

Can the future tense express probability?+

Yes. The simple future can guess about the present: Serán las diez (it must be about ten), Estará en casa (he's probably home). This is called the future of probability.

How do you say 'there will be' in Spanish?+

Use habrá, the future of hay. It comes from the irregular stem habr- and stays the same for singular and plural: Habrá una fiesta / Habrá muchos invitados.

Are these future tense exercises free?+
