IWhat to watch for

Esperar is regular in the preterite: esperé, esperaste, esperó, esperamos, esperasteis, esperaron. The accent separates esperó (he waited) from espero (I wait), and esperamos is the same in the present and the preterite.

The preterite measures a finished wait (esperé al médico más de una hora, esperaron toda la noche) and single decisions to wait or not: no esperé a nadie y me fui a casa.
