Esperar is a regular -ar verb: espero, esperas, espera, esperamos, esperáis, esperan. One verb covers three English ones: to wait (espero el autobús), to hope (espero que te guste) and to expect (no espero nada de él).

Esperar a alguien is to wait for someone — with a before a person, no preposition before a thing. Esperar un bebé is to be expecting a baby. After espero que, the next verb goes into the subjunctive.
