Empezar Imperfect Practice

Empezar (to start, to begin) in the imperfect: 14 free exercises with an explanation after every answer, plus the full conjugation table.

IWhat to watch for

Good news: in the imperfect, empezar is completely regular. No stem change, no spelling change — just empez- plus the -ar endings: empezaba, empezabas, empezaba, empezábamos, empezabais, empezaban.

The main trap is choosing this tense over the preterite: use the imperfect for habits (siempre, todos los veranos, de niño) and for actions that were just getting underway when something else happened. Remember the accent in empezábamos.
