The rule, in plain English.

English gets by with "this" and "that," but Spanish points with three distances. Este is for what's near you, the speaker (aquí); ese for what's near the person you're talking to (ahí); and aquel for what's far from both of you (allí). Each one agrees in gender and number with its noun: este/esta/estos/estas, ese/esa/esos/esas, aquel/aquella/aquellos/aquellas. Two traps catch almost everyone. First, the masculine singular before a noun is este, never esto — esto coche is always wrong.

Second, esto, eso and aquello do exist, but only as neuter pronouns for things you can't name yet or for whole ideas: ¿Qué es esto? Eso no me gusta. They never sit in front of a noun and never carry an accent. Demonstratives also work alone as pronouns (prefiero esa) and show up in time expressions: esta noche, en ese momento, aquellos años. Note that aquel has no accent on the a.

Questions answered

Common questions.

What is the difference between este, ese and aquel?+

It's a three-way distance system. Este points to what's near the speaker (aquí), ese to what's near the listener (ahí), and aquel to what's far from both (allí). English collapses ese and aquel into "that," which is why the middle distance takes practice.

When do I use esto instead of este?+

Este goes before a noun or replaces a known noun: este libro, prefiero este. Esto is the neuter pronoun for things you can't yet name or for whole ideas: ¿Qué es esto? Esto no me gusta. Esto can never sit in front of a noun — esto coche is always wrong.

Do demonstratives agree with the noun?+

Yes, in gender and number, just like adjectives: este chico, esta chica, estos chicos, estas chicas — and the same pattern for ese/esa/esos/esas and aquel/aquella/aquellos/aquellas. Watch masculine nouns in -a like el problema: este problema.

Do Spanish demonstratives need accent marks?+

No. Since the 2010 spelling reform the RAE recommends writing all demonstratives without accents, even when they work as pronouns. The neuters esto, eso and aquello have never carried an accent, and aquel has no accent on the a either.

How do demonstratives work with time?+

Este covers time close to now: esta noche, esta semana, este año. Ese picks out a specific moment in a story: en ese momento. Aquel evokes a remote, often nostalgic past: aquellos años, aquel verano en Galicia.

Are these exercises free?+

Yes. All 30 exercises run right in your browser, need no signup, and give you a clear explanation after every answer.
