The rule, in plain English.

A Spanish adjective must agree with the noun it describes in both gender (masculine / feminine) and number (singular / plural). The endings depend on the adjective's base form.

Adjectives ending in -o have four forms; those ending in -e or most consonants change only for number, not gender. Most adjectives come after the noun.

22 exercises below. Read the explanation after each answer — that's where the rule sinks in.

Questions answered

Common questions.

How does adjective agreement work in Spanish?+

The adjective copies the noun's gender and number. For an -o adjective there are four forms (alto, alta, altos, altas). For -e adjectives and most consonant adjectives the gender doesn't change (inteligente, azul); only the plural adds -s or -es.

Do all Spanish adjectives change for gender?+

No. Adjectives ending in -o have separate masculine and feminine forms. Adjectives ending in -e (inteligente, grande) and most ending in a consonant (azul, fácil) use the same form for both genders. Exceptions that do add -a: nationalities (español → española) and adjectives ending in -dor, -ón, -án.

What ending does an adjective take for a mixed-gender group?+

The masculine plural. If you describe a group with both men and women — or masculine and feminine nouns — use -os: Pedro y María son altos; la camisa y el pantalón son nuevos.

Where does the adjective go, before or after the noun?+

Most descriptive adjectives follow the noun: una casa blanca, un coche rápido. A few shorten before a masculine singular noun (buen, mal, gran), and some change meaning by position (un viejo amigo = long-time friend vs un amigo viejo = elderly friend).

Why is it un gran libro but un libro grande?+

Grande shortens to gran before any singular noun and there means great. After the noun it keeps its full form and means big in size: un gran hombre (a great man) vs un hombre grande (a big man).

Are these adjective agreement exercises free?+

Yes. All 22 exercises run in your browser, need no signup, and give a clear explanation after every answer.
