IWhat to watch for

Tomar is a regular -ar verb: tomo, tomas, toma, tomamos, tomáis, toman. It means to take — the bus, a pill, a decision, notes — and, very often, to have something to eat or drink: ¿qué tomas?, tomo un café.

Several fixed phrases are worth learning with it: tomar el sol (to sunbathe), tomar el pelo (to pull someone's leg) and tomarse algo en serio (to take something seriously). Taking something somewhere is llevar, not tomar.
