The rule, in plain English.

To tell time in Spanish, use ser and the hour with a feminine article: es la una for one o'clock, son las dos, son las tres for every other hour. Add minutes with y (son las cuatro y diez), subtract them from the next hour with menos (son las cinco menos cuarto), and say y cuarto and y media for quarter past and half past; a las tells when something happens.

Days of the week and months are written in lowercase and take el instead of a preposition — el lunes means on Monday, los lunes every Monday — and dates follow the pattern el 5 de mayo de 2026.

30 exercises below. Read the explanation after each answer — that's where the rule sinks in.

Questions answered

Common questions.

How do you tell time in Spanish?+

Use ser with la or las and the hour: es la una, son las dos, son las diez. Add minutes with y (son las tres y veinte) and subtract them from the next hour with menos (son las cuatro menos diez). To say when something happens, use a: a las ocho.

Why is it es la una but son las dos?+

The hour stands for horas, a feminine noun. One o'clock is one hour, so verb and article are singular: es la una. From two o'clock on the hours are plural: son las dos, son las once.

How do you say quarter past, half past and quarter to?+

Quarter past is y cuarto (son las dos y cuarto), half past is y media (son las dos y media), and quarter to is menos cuarto with the next hour (son las tres menos cuarto = 2:45).

Are days of the week and months capitalized in Spanish?+

No. Days and months are ordinary nouns in Spanish: lunes, martes, enero, octubre. They take a capital letter only at the start of a sentence.

How do you write the date in Spanish?+

Day, then month, then year, joined by de: el 12 de octubre de 2026. Use cardinal numbers (el veinte de junio); only the first of the month is often an ordinal, el primero de mayo. In numbers the day also comes first: 12/10/2026.

What is the difference between el lunes and los lunes?+

El lunes is one particular Monday — this coming one or the one just past. Los lunes means every Monday, a habit. Neither takes a preposition: Spanish has no word for on before a day.

Is there a printable worksheet on telling time in Spanish?+

Yes — this page has a free printable worksheet (PDF) with all 30 exercises and an answer key with short explanations. It prints on A4 and US Letter and is free for classroom use, no sign-up needed.
