The rule, in plain English.

Stem-changing verbs — querer, poder, pedir, dormir, jugar — are some of the most common verbs in Spanish, and they all play by one rule. In the present tense, the last vowel of the stem changes whenever the stress falls on it: e opens to ie (quiero), o opens to ue (puedo), and in a small group of -ir verbs e drops to i (pido). Jugar is the lone u→ue verb (juego). The endings stay perfectly regular; only the vowel inside the word moves.

The secret to the system is the boot: write the six present-tense forms in a grid and circle the ones that change — yo, tú, él/ella/usted, ellos/ellas/ustedes — and the circle looks like a boot. Nosotros and vosotros sit outside the boot, so they keep the original vowel: quiero but queremos, puedes but podéis. Watch out for one more twist: -ir stem changers also shift in the gerund (durmiendo) and in the third-person preterite (pidió).

Questions answered

Common questions.

What is a stem-changing verb in Spanish?+

It's a verb whose stem vowel changes in the present tense whenever the stress falls on it: e→ie (querer → quiero), o→ue (poder → puedo), e→i (pedir → pido), plus u→ue for jugar (juego). The endings stay completely regular — only the vowel inside the stem moves.

What is the boot (or shoe) pattern?+

Write the six present-tense forms in a grid and draw a line around the forms that change — yo, tú, él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes. The shape looks like a boot. Nosotros and vosotros sit outside the boot and keep the original stem: quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren.

Why don't nosotros and vosotros change the stem?+

Because in those forms the stress falls on the ending, not the stem: que-RE-mos, que-RÉIS. The vowel only changes when it carries the stress, so the unstressed stem stays intact. That's why quieremos and puedéis are always wrong.

How do I know if a verb is e→ie or e→i?+

You memorize it, but there's a shortcut: e→i verbs are always -ir verbs — pedir, servir, repetir, seguir, vestir. Common e→ie verbs include querer, pensar, empezar, cerrar, entender, preferir and sentir. When in doubt, contrast pedir → pido with preferir → prefiero.

Do stem changes happen outside the present tense?+

For -ar and -er verbs, no — volver gives volviendo and volvió with no change. But -ir stem changers also shift in the gerund (durmiendo, pidiendo, sintiendo) and in the third-person preterite (durmió, pidió, prefirió). These exercises drill both traps.
